Titans rookie Matt Srama will learn from Storm's master Cameron Smith TITANS rookie Matt Srama has already impressed Melbourne captain Cameron Smith from the lounge room. Now he has the chance to do it face to face in a classic battle of master versus apprentice at Skilled Park on Saturday night. The ease with which Srama has slotted in to the cauldron of NRL this season has impressed plenty of judges but none more so than Smith, who recently described him as one of the most promising rakes in the game. "I like the way he plays, he's enthusiastic and is sharp around the rucks. He's certainly got a big future," Smith said last month. The compliment would not have gone unnoticed by Srama, who will line up for NRL game No.11 against Smith, the Australian Test hooker with 208 games under his belt. Titans assistant coach Steve Murphy said Srama would be primed for a massive night against the competition benchmarks. "Cam Smith has been glowing in his appraisals of Matty in the press," he said. "So Matty will be absolutely loving playing against probably one of the best players in the world on Saturday night." (Story Courtesy Jeremy Pierce & Courier Mail)
What a win for Chooks! Fox Sports commentator Matt Russell previews the round 22 Toyota Cup TV game . What a win for Chooks! Jason Taylor's Sydney Roosters are flying. The Bondi Boys made it six in a row by belting Canterbury-Bankstown 50-8 on Saturday. It shouldn't be dismissed as just another Toyota Cup blowout. Canterbury entered the round as the best defensive team in the competition, having given up only 330 points at an average of 18 per game. But that defence couldn't stop the Roosters, left, right or centre. The 42-point win was their biggest of 2011. They were just short of the 48 needed to equal the all-time records of Roosters' biggest win and Dogs' heaviest loss. Twice in this streak have the Roosters reached 50 points and the past two wins have come against top eight teams. Why are the Roosters going so well? Halves Jack Littlejohn and Ryley Jacks have a great combination and an exciting backline to feed. Prop Kane Evans scored two tries last weekend to continue the form that saw him made 18th man for the Roosters' NRL side recently. Backrower Ethan Lowe has scored six tries in his past five games. The big bodies of Brandon Tago and Tai Tuivasa provide great impact off the bench. They are expected to put another big score on Manly at Brookvale on Sunday.
Brisbane Broncos players Josh Hoffman and Gerard Beale locked in battle for New Zealand jersey THEY are best of mates at Red Hill. But Josh Hoffman and Gerard Beale are on a collision course for a coveted New Zealand jumper following Hoffman's latest scintillating display in the Broncos backfield. Sidelined early in the season with a nasty leg injury, Hoffman has recaptured peak form over the past six weeks, headlined by his outstanding effort against the Titans last Friday night at Suncorp Stadium. In greasy conditions, Hoffman provided thrust and a cool head from the back, running for a game-high 174m from 16 runs before scoring the late try that killed off the Titans. Hoffman's rousing return has given Broncos coach Anthony Griffin some welcome selection headaches, and now Kiwi coach Stephen Kearney is about to face a similar dilemma. Broncos utility Beale was a shock bolter for the extended Kiwi squad in May's Anzac Test, but he faces some competition from Hoffman for a New Zealand berth for the end-of-season Four Nations. Ironically, the pair only swore their allegiance to the Kiwis this season, and Hoffman hopes the duo can both wear the black-and-white jumper in October. "It is a goal (playing for New Zealand in the Four Nations), it would be one of the highlights of my career," Hoffman said. "It's not a competition between us really. Being team-mates as we are, we like to see each other make it to the top, it was good to see Bealey in the 18-man squad for the Kiwis and I'd like to be there with them as well. "At the moment, I'm concentrating on the Broncos and playing some consistent footy for them." Broncos coach Anthony Griffin said he couldn't be happier with Hoffman's confidence at the back since his return from injury. "He's having a good season Josh, it was great to see him get that try at the end (against the Titans)," he said. Particularly in that second half when the game got into a grind, he made a lot of metres coming out of dummy half and bringing the ball back.”He put his body on the line a few times when he had to." For Hoffman, part of his motivation is repaying Griffin's support. In his absence, Beale blitzed opponents at the back, but Griffin had no hesitation handing Hoffman the No.1 jumper when he was ready for action. "Hook has showed a lot of faith in me this year," he said. "It was good to see him (Beale) shine in the fullback position and Hook had a bit of faith in him too. It has made it harder for me to come back and perform well. The start of the year wasn't too good for me with the fracture. I have been trying to get my confidence back and just really help the side come together as a team. "It's something I've been working on, getting out from marker and making some good dummy-half runs. I've been wanting to help the team. The last few weeks, the younger blokes really had to dig deep and find that 1 per cent (without Brisbane's Origin stars). "It makes it easier for the Origin guys coming back when we're making sure we work hard for each other." (Story courtesy Peter Badel Courier Mail)
Dowling hat-trick can’t stop Comets THE Central Comets have survived a late rally from a desperate Burleigh Bears outfit to clinch their seventh win of the Intrust Super Cup season. The final result was in the balance right up until the final siren when the Bears had a chance to level the score with a sideline conversion. However, Burleigh missed the difficult kick, allowing the Comets to hang on for a 22-20 victory in front of their home fans at Browne Park. Burleigh’s Jamie Dowling almost single-handedly kept the visitors in the contest by completing a stunning hat-trick in the second half.
Tutuila scores 4 Norths' backrower James Tutuila has picked up 4 tries on the weekend.
Ain’t half bad As Roosters Toyota Cup half Ryley Jacks raced away to score a fantastic individual try on Sunday, I was reminded how lucky Generation Next can be. When Jacks was born in Brisbane in 1992, Jason Taylor was leading Wests to a Major Preliminary Semi Final in his third season of first grade. Taylor would go on to spend 12 years at the top and finish with 2107 points from 276 games. Some career! Now JT is coaching the Roosters Under 20s and Jacks can tap into one of the game’s great halves any day of the week. It’s not just the Roosters. How good would it be for Blake Fitzpatrick and TJ Taotua at the Dogs, who spend time with 307-gamer Brett Kimmorley? How about being a forward at Melbourne under premiership-winning enforcer Dean Pay? The list goes on. The point wasn’t lost on Robbie Farah, my co-caller on Sunday, who stressed how vital hooker-cum-coach Royce Simmons had been in his early days at the Tigers. It’s not just footy skills. I am constantly struck with how much effort and satisfaction the Toyota Cup coaches get from helping their players with life skills. (story courtesy Matt Russell NRL.com)
Hoffman features in One Point win Broncos fullback, Josh Hoffman has scored a crucial second half try against the Canberra Raiders. Hoffman, who is only 2 weeks back from injury looked every bit the 2010 Broncos Player of the Year with a game high 205 metres in attack and a vital one-on-one tackle to save a try. The Raiders stormed back into the game to level at 24 all and force extra time. Broncos halfback Peter Wallace kicked a field goal to win the game and claim a much needed two points for the Broncos. The Broncos host the Dragons on Friday night with their Origin Stars back.
Huge wraps on rookie Gold Coast Titans hooker Matt Srama GOLD Coast assistant coach Steve Murphy has hosed down comparisons between boom rake Matt Srama and Cameron Smith at the same age, but believes he is a future 10-year Titan. Srama has been sensational since being drafted into first grade from the under-20s three weeks ago, earning many plaudits along the way. While Murphy admitted Srama was a special talent, he said it was important not to get too carried away. "We think he is the real deal but any comparisons to Cameron Smith are definitely premature," Murphy said. "He is a composed young man and he will play a lot of first grade for this club, make no mistake about that. We have got a very high opinion of the young man and we are ecstatic he is performing at the level he is at such a young age. "He is only a slightly built young fella and we don't want to rush him at this level because we are hoping for him to be a 10-year Titan." Srama will again start in the No. 9 jumper against the Rabbitohs in Sydney on Friday night, in the wake of season-ending shoulder surgery to workaholic first-string hooker Nathan Friend. "I wouldn't say he has surprised us, we knew we had a pretty special talent in young Matty," Murphy said. "But we were very respectful of the stage he is at in his development. "We are just hoping he can continue to play consistent football." Already streets ahead in the voting for the Titans under-20 player of the year award, Srama has already polled points in the first grade's Paul Broughton Medal count and could be in the running to bag a rare double if his run of good form continues. "It is every possibility if he continues at the rate he is going," Murphy said. "The important thing for Matty is to understand that involvement in this game is special and he has to treat each game as if it were his last. If he does that, and I am sure he will, he will be around for a long time." Titans coach John Cartwright has named a 19-man squad against the Rabbitohs. (Story Luke Turgeon Daily Telegraph)
Young Broncos Bury Rabbitohs THE NRMA Insurance Broncos under-20s have produced a confidence-building performance after dispatching the South Sydney Rabbitohs in Sydney yesterday. The young Broncos lead 10-4 at halftime and were never headed as they took down the Bunnies 32-24 at North Sydney Oval. It was a good win for a team that has been hammered by injuries, the most recent a season-ending shoulder reconstruction for Aaron Whitchurch. “We scored a couple of tries straight after the break to get well in front, but they came back at us,” said Broncos NYC coach Kurt Richards. “I was happy with the performance. We were down on troops so it should be a big confidence builder.” Benn Malley impressed with his shift to hooker, while David Faamita (above) was dangerous out wide and Chris Binge and Dane Gagai also contributed. “Benn made 34 tackles and was sound with the ball so that was a good effort,” said Richards. “David Faamita was very good at left centre and made some linebreaks.” The young Broncos now sit just one win outside top eight but have a real chance to improve that when they play equal-seventh Parramatta on Friday afternoon.
Another try to Dowling in tight Bears win Bears makeshift halfback Jamie Dowling had another great game picking up their only try in a tight 7-6 win over the Cutters in Mackay. Dowling has shown his versatility over the last few playing halfback in an injury hit Burleigh team. Dowling started the season at fullback and was an early favourite for the Queensland Residents side. He was then selected in the Australian Universities team as a centre. "I'll play anywhere I need to for the team" Dowling said after the game. "Yeah it was tough in Mackay but we got away with the two points."
Titans down but Rookies still shine NRL rookies Ryan James & Matt Srama continue to lead the way in a struggling Titans side. The Titans went down 23-10 to Penrith on Saturday night in a game riddled with Titans handling errors. Srama, who played 63 minutes in his 2nd NRL game finished with 33 tackles and a Titans high 69 touches of the ball with no errors. He looked sharp and threatened the line every time he ran from dummy half. James only played 30 minutes but made 9 runs for 97 metres with 20 tackles & 1 offload. He also looked dangerous every time he handled the ball & continues to impress off the bench. The two rookies and young winger David Mead have been bright lights over the last few weeks for a side that is struggling to put points on the board. The Gold Coast team continue to turn over cheap possession and the younger players look the most likely players to pull the Titans out of their 4 match losing streak. (Story Courtesy RLC)
Wallace continues to impress Broncos NYC player Daniel Wallace continues to impress in this year Toyota Cup. Wallace has been a standout for the Broncos 20’s this year playing in numerous positions; excelling in all. Catalyst Sports Management’s Paul Srama has been very pleased with the progress Wallace has made since joining the NRL Club late last year from the Easts Tigers. “I think he can go a long way in Rugby League” Srama said last week, after watching Wallace play at Suncorp Stadium. “He has all the attributes of a top class footballer. He has speed, toughness and durability. He was very good for Easts Colts last year, but this is another step up and he seems to relish the challenge” Wallace, who has played at Centre, Lock, Second Row & Prop, has also come off the bench a number of times to fill any gaps needed. Wallace will be hoping that there is something available at the next level after this season but just wants to concentrate on the job at hand. “We still have a lot of football left in this Season,” Wallace said. “I hope that I can stay fit and we can finish strongly in the Toyota Cup. I would love to play some semi-final football with the Broncs” Wallace has been named at centre for the Broncos clash with the Sharks this week .
Back-from-injury Bronco Josh Hoffman revealed he walked around for three weeks with a broken leg REIGNING Bronco of the Year Josh Hoffman has revealed he walked around town for three weeks in March-April with a broken leg believed to be just a cork. Hoffman will today be named for a long overdue return to NRL action in Friday night's round 13 clash at Cronulla after 10 weeks on the sideline - with revelation stand-in Gerard Beale expected to shuffle into the centres. Hoffman's comeback will prove a timely morale boost for a Brisbane side out to arrest a three-match slide against a Sharks side that battled gamely in a 14-8 defeat to the Storm in Melbourne on Sunday. Hoffman suffered a lower leg injury in the Broncos' round 3 derby win over the Titans and even prepared for a return to action against the Roosters in round 6. But persistent pain prompted scans, which showed a fracture, and delayed his comeback another month. "It was actually a fracture in the fibula," Hoffman said of his 10-game lay-off. "The first few weeks, we thought it was a cork and treated it like a cork and just rehabbed it, but apparently I was just running around on a broken leg for about three weeks so it's taken longer to heal. It's been pretty hard. "After three weeks I started running around and it started feeling good. I was getting ready for a game and preparing myself to play, but it took a bit longer than I thought." The 23-year-old No.1 is now looking to make up for lost time as he did last season, overcoming ankle surgery to win the club's coveted best and fairest award. Hoffman's expected resumption of the No.1 jumper is a tough but fair call on Beale, who shot into the Kiwis' 19-man Test squad on the back of his outstanding cameos. "Bealey's done a very good job but he'll be happy to have me there," Hoffman said. "The boys have had a tough few weeks. It'd be good to get back there and guide them around a bit. "I'm looking forward to getting back on the field. It's going to be a bit hard trying to get back into that groove of things, trying to talk to the boys, it'll take a few training sessions, but once I get into it I'll feel confident and comfortable in the position." Hoffman said self-belief in Brisbane's squad remained high but a win against the grinding Sharks was needed to steady the ship. "The main thing we've been working on is our defence. It didn't show against Manly but we'll work really hard against the Sharks," he said. "They'll be tough coming from that loss in Melbourne. They'll be pretty hard. A lot of our boys will take a lot out of that loss, they'll be raring to go." (Story Courtesy Matt Marshall & Courier Mail)
Soe defence rock solid in Keebra win Centre Bradley Soe was a defensive standout in a 34-10 Keebra win over Wavell High on Wednesday night at Shaw Park. The young Ipswich product is headed to Wests Tigers in November and really looked the part of a future U20's player with hard hitting defence.
Srama the shining light in luckless Titans loss The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans' luckless run continued tonight in a disappointing 28-6 loss to the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium. In a game which accurately mirrored the club's luckless season thus far, the Titans remarkably had four tries disallowed by the video referee and two bombed of their own accord in a disappointing defeat on Queensland soil. It took 75 minutes for the Titans to finally cross for their first points of the match with halfback Scott Prince scoring off some nice lead-up work by rookie hooker Matt Srama, who was making his first grade debut. The debut performance of Srama was one of few shining lights for the Titans, as a combination of errors and execution continued to hurt them. Coach John Cartwright said in the post game press conference that Srama was made for NRL. “I’ve been very confident in him all along. Anyone who has watched him week in & week out knows that he was ready for first grade footy.” Cartwright said. The Titans will have to regroup now for their next match; a home game against the Panthers.
Tutiula makes Qld Rangers Norths' backrower James Tutuila has been picked in the Qld Rangers team to play in the Australian 2nd Division championships in July. They will be held in Coonababran. Tutuila, who has had a mixed season with the Devils, was a late call up to the Brisbane Team in last weekends State Championships. He was outstanding coming off the bench and forced his way into the Queensland Team.
Jacks Back Young Roosters NYC halfback Ryley Jacks is back in the saddle this week against the Cowboys in Townsville on Saturday night, after a two week layoff. Jacks above, returns after a minor shoulder injury sustained in a training mishap. He said this week he was very keen to get back on the field.
Blair leads Easts to CC Victory THE Easts Tigers scored a thrilling 28-22 win over the Central Comets in front of a big crowd at Langlands Park today to clinch the 2011 Cyril Connell Cup. Easts trailed 12-10 at half-time, but the Tigers gained the upper hand in the second half on the back of two blistering tries to electric fullback Eric Blair. The Comets came back with two tries of their own to regain the lead 22-20 with 12 minutes to go. However, the Tigers grabbed the momentum again following a clever 40-20 by five-eighth Brayden Torpy. Half-back Wilson Bennett darted over from the scrum base to put the Tigers in front again and when Brendan McBryde barged over for his second in the dying minutes, the Connell Cup was all but in the hands of the Tigers. Eric Blair & Brendan McBryde were later named in the Qld U 16 team to play NSW as a curtain raiser to the 1st State of Origin.
Pearson tells of Yasi experience A RUSTING old ute, filled to the hilt with sandbags, drives frantically across dusty roads on the picturesque Poruma Island in the Torres Strait. In the ute sits giant Ipswich Jets young gun Cornwell Pearson and his two mates. Of the 180 residents on the speck of land, they are among the handful remaining. Their job: to sandbag the entire island because the worst cyclone to hit Australia is bearing down. Fortunately for the Jets Colts team, the village and all 114 kilograms of Pearson survived the wrath of Cyclone Yasi last month. “If Yasi had turned north instead of south as it was approaching we would have been wiped out but thankfully we had little damage,” Pearson said. Poruma, surrounded by pristine aqua coloured water and coral reef, is famous for its five-star beach-front resort, which costs $800 per night to stay in. “Me and a few guys, we just sandbagged everything. The resort was the main concern,” Pearson said. “I was supposed to come down to the Jets when Yasi was approaching, but I was trapped on the island for two weeks. “My dad was my trainer for those two weeks. We just did a lot of beach sessions. “I’m a bit behind the other guys in the team now so I was surprised to be picked in the 17 to start the year.” Pearson flashes a large diamond stud on his left ear, but his personality is far removed from the gangster rappers the bling mimics. He is polite and articulate and despite being just 19 years old is a role model for the youth of Poruma. Pearson is one of the few people from Poruma to attend a university. “A lot of people on the island look up to me as a role model and that means a lot,” he said. “I’m studying education at Queensland University of Technology and I like to show the kids back home that you can make it away from the island. “The island is beautiful. Everyone knows each other and supports each other. There’s great fishing and snorkelling.” But don’t judge Pearson’s manners for a passive demeanour. The kid is a bush footballer through and through. “I can’t wait to bash blokes,” he said when asked if he was excited about the season. “That’s why I need to get fitter, so I can rush off the line to put big hits on.” Pearson has lived primarily in Brisbane for the past three years, attending Brisbane Boys College on a rugby union scholarship. He returns home regularly to see his family. He came to the Jets on the recommendation of his manager (Catalyst Sports Management) after yearning to return to rugby league. He performed well in the Colts’ first game last weekend, although the Jets lost to the Easts Tigers 18-6 at Langlands Park. Jets Colts’ assistant coach Peter Hockings said Pearson had NRL potential. “His teammates are often annoyed at him because he goes so hard at training and bashes them up,” Hockings said. “He has great potential. There were some NRL scouts at one of our trials and I don’t know how they didn’t sign him there, because he was outstanding.” Pearson said he looked up to fellow Torres Strait footballer and Brisbane Broncos star Sam Thaiday. He hoped to emulate his idol and represent his region on a grand stage. “People on Poruma wished they had the opportunities I have, so I have to make them count,” he said. Thorpe & Jacks set for big seasons After spending 5 weeks before Christmas in the Melbourne Storm program, Steve Thorpe & Rhys Jacks have started the season well in a trial for the Storm. Playing against the Jets at Langlands Park on Friday night, Thorpe scored 2 first half tries & Jacks was the consummate professional in the halves & at hooker. The Storm led the Jets 36 nil at the half time break before being rested. Both will feature with the Storm's new feeder club Easts Tigers in the Qld Cup.
Kameli brings up 100 not out for Sarries One more week for Hoffman Broncos Player of the year for 2010 will have to wait one more week before making his comeback from a leg injury. Hoffman had hoped to play against Manly at Suncoprp in the NRL Double header this week, was advised to give the leg one more week. He should be right to play the Sharks in a must win game next Friday night in Sydney.
Titans' Srama head on with Ennis THE Titans will pitchfork talented Toyota Cup star Matt Srama into a head-on battle with NSW rake Michael Ennis in their crunch showdown against the Bulldogs at Suncorp Stadium tonight. With the Titans expected to make a decision on the availability of State of Origin toilers Greg Bird and Ashley Harrison today, coach John Cartwright has called on Srama as the Titans look to snap their disappointing start to the season. While Cartwright was reluctant to confirm Srama's selection yesterday, the 20-year-old trained strongly at dummy-half as Riley Brown, who was named to start in the No.9, watched much of the session from the sideline. Brown's ability to step into the back row could see him retain a seat on the bench together with emerging forward Ben Ridge if Cartwright decides to rest Harrison and Bird. Despite the major test awaiting Srama, both Cartwright and captain Scott Prince tipped last season's Titans' under-20 player of the year to handle the situation. After recently signing a three-year deal keeping him at the Titans until the end of 2014, Srama is considered by many as the logical choice to replace departing star Nathan Friend. Titans re-sign young gun Srama for 3 more years The Jetstar Gold Coast Titans have secured another emerging youngster by today re-signing National Youth Competition (NYC) hooker Matt Srama to a new three-year contract. Srama, the club’s Toyota Cup Player of the Year last season and existing NYC hooker, has today signed a new three-year deal which will keep him at the club until the end of the 2014 season. He joins the likes of fellow rising stars Jamal Idris (aged 20), Ryan James (19), Kevin Gordon (21), Ben Ridge (21), David Mead (22) and Bodene Thompson (22) at the club over the next few years. The talented 20-year-old has come through the Jetstar Titans Junior Pathways Program having graduated from the club’s Under-18s and Under-20s sides to currently be on the verge of NRL selection. Jetstar Titans Coach John Cartwright said Srama’s re-signing was an important one for the future of the club and compared his style of play to that of departing hooker Nathan Friend. “I think anyone who has watched him play, right from when he came from our Under-18s into our Under-20s, you can see who he models his game on. With his headgear on he not only looks like Nathan Friend but he pretty well copies everything he does on the field,’’ said Cartwright. “We thought with that sort of work ethic and with Friendy moving on, his signature became very important for us. “Matty’s form in the under-20s has been outstanding and he’s not far away from a start (in the NRL). If the side in not performing, we need to keep looking at how we can improve and I’d have no problem at all in putting Matt in the side at any stage this year. “He played through the pre-season trials and he’s proven himself in the Under-20s and that’s what it’s there for – if they’re going well and there’s a spot available I say use them.’’ Srama, a junior of West Brisbane club Centenary Panthers, said he was thrilled to have the opportunity to remain at the Jetstar Titans as he attempts to break his way into first grade. "I’m really happy with it, I owe a lot to the Titans being loyal to me. I’ve been happy with the way I’ve been going and hopefully if I ever get a run in the top grade, I can grab it with both hands and I can repay their faith in re-signing me,’’ said Srama. “Not too many have made it from the Ipswich catchment area to the Titans so I hope to be one of the first to crack it at the top grade here to show people there is a pathway from Ipswich and the Western Brisbane suburbs. I’d be over the moon if I could crack it one day.’’ Jetstar Titans Managing Director Michael Searle said Srama was a great example of the success of the club’s Junior Pathways Program, which starts with development squads at Under 13s and Under 14s right through to Under 16s, Under 18s, Under 20s and NRL. “Matty is a good young player from the local area so to be able to keep him here at the club is fantastic,’’ said Searle. “I’m sure his best football is in front of him and we are looking forward to seeing how he develops over the next three years.’’
Dowling double in Bears win Burleigh Bears fullback & centre Jamie Dowling has scored 2 crucial tries in the Bears win over Norths in Saturdays Qld Cup ABC Match of the round. Dowling was named Man of the Match in another outstanding performance which could see him named in the Country team to play City in a few weeks. The ABC's David Wright said in the commentary Dowling was outstanding, covering a number of positions. "He's really turned the game for the Bears in a tip-top performance" said Wright. Dowling has been named as 5/8 in the Bears next game, showing his versatility.
Rookie Josh Hoffman is Bronco of the year IT IS a list which reads like a who's who of rugby league, and last night rookie fullback Josh Hoffman joined them as a shock winner of the Broncos player of the year. Joining a list which includes Allan Langer, Petero Civoniceva, Gorden Tallis and his own cousin Wendell Sailor, Hoffman outshone Test and Origin stars Darren Lockyer and Sam Thaiday to claim the coveted gong.
It was an astonishing feat by Hoffman, who started the year behind Corey Norman in the battle to fill the fullback's position left vacant by the departure of Karmichael Hunt. But Hoffman quickly started to turn heads with his courage and class at the back of the field. He trailed Thaiday for long stages of the year, but rattled home in the closing rounds, with votes given on a 3-2-1 basis for each game by the players and also one of the club's former internationals. Hoffman also collected the players' player and most improved player awards in a season that ultimately ended in disappointment, with the Broncos missing the finals for the first time in two decades, but also unearthed a number of stars of the future. Stable kids safe in clean new age THE sleaziest cog of the NRL machine is undergoing a dramatic revolution. Five years ago if a rugby league player agent met a young client’s family, the agent was concerned about one thing only – the size of the kid’s father. “Is my prodigy going to fill out?” would ring through the agent’s heads as they knocked on the family’s front door. Agents used to hand out promises like Pakistan cricket officials hand out life bans, and when the fantasy collapsed their young prodigy only had a Year 10 education to fall back on. But the rules of the player management game have been redrafted. Now if a 14-year-old five-eighth touted as the next Benji Marshall has an unstable family, player agents will say thanks but no thanks, even if his father is 6’4. “What’s the point in investing time into a player who even if they make the NRL won’t last because of their off-field behaviour,” Paul Srama, from Catalyst Sports Management said. “If they have their contract cut you lose out too. You would rather put the effort into kids who want to do the hard work.” Srama used to coach the Ipswich Jets in the 90’s. His first client was his younger brother Matt who plays for the Gold Coast Titans. He has been a player agent for just two years and said those of his ilk could no longer afford to be a money-centric businessman. “An agent now has to think very carefully about signing a kid who is getting into trouble at school,” he said. “A kid is unlikely to make the NRL these days unless he has a stable family and a good education.” Agents are one of the most hated aspects of professional sport. They are currently blamed for rugby league’s dilution of talent, lack of loyalty and salary cap rorts. But Srama said it was a poisonous minority corrupting the public’s perception.“There are some seedy types in the business and they ruin it for the rest of us who simply want to see the kids who work hard do well,” Srama said. “The agents coming in now are former coaches like myself who can offer the kids development on the field not just business advice.” Srama has signed more than a dozen Ipswich youngsters including Ipswich Jets colts Callum Waldrum, James Furminger and Zac Lemberg. He said he signs south-east Queensland talent only as he’s witnessed too many Queens- land kids with Sydney managers get lost in rugby league’s mosaic system. Srama's latest success story is 13-year-old Camira star Kaleo Tupa’i. Tupa’i, an athletic fullback from the Springfield Panthers, has just signed with the Brisbane Broncos as part of their development squad.' His mother Cozette is still shocked that her Year 8 son has a manager and was the subject of an NRL bidding war. “I was like no way, who does that? What kid has a manager?” Cozette said. “He’s still in Year 8 and signed to an NRL club . . . it’s bizarre.” The NRL is also trying to scrub the player agent game clean. It wants agents and players to sign statutory declarations that their contracts adhere to salary cap laws. The move was met with caution from agents and players. But Srama said Catalyst would happily sign such a legal document.“If you have nothing to hide then what’s the problem?” Srama said. “Everyone thinks we’re only after the money but it is genuinely about seeing the kids succeed. I love seeing them take each step but I don’t get paid until they make decent money.” Sam Ayoub, one of rugby league’s leading player agents who has Johnathan Thurston on the books, agreed that agents now had to consider a youngster’s off field record in front of their talent. “Family is one of the main things I look at when signing a kid. If he has a good, stable family, everything else will fall into place,” Ayoub said. “It doesn’t make sense to sign kids solely based off their talent anymore.” Srama will be at Briggs Road ground tonight to cast his eye over one talent in the under-16 grade. Apparently his father is 6’4. (Courtesy Chris Garry Qld Times )
Young Catalyst Stars through to Grand Final Young Catalyst Stars Brad Cherry from Redcliffe Dolphins and Tyrone Tootell from Logan Brothers have helped steer their teams into Junior Grand Finals over the coming weeks. Both starred in their respective major semi-finals on Friday night and will line up in 2 weeks for the season decider. Cherry is the Captain and 5/8 for the Minor Premiers Redcliffe, in The U15 Premier Division. They had a golden point win over the Easts Carina side, 18-16 after their kicker missed an easy conversion late in the 2nd half; but slotted a harder penalty kick in extra time. For Carina their fullback Eric Blair was a standout and almost won Carina the game in the final minutes of normal time. Cherry, who now works as a concreter has been in outstanding form all season and was considered very unlucky by many good judges to miss the Queensland U15 team earlier in the year. Tootell plays fullback for the Logan Brothers U14 top division side and they were also minor premiers. In a sometimes spiteful match, Logan won 46 - 8 with Tootell scoring a 50 metre individual try to put the icing on the cake, mid way through the 2nd half.
Finals spot on the line for Jets Colts THE Ipswich Jets Colts will need star forward Zac Lemberg and key playmaker Callum Waldrum to show they deserve the wraps placed on them if their team is to advance to the finals today. The Colts boys play for their season at 4.30pm at North Ipswich Reserve against the Sunshine Coast Eagles. The last time the two teams played in Round 20 the Jets emerged 28-22 victors after coming back from their routine half-time deficit. Jets coach Mark Bishop said his team was relaxed but excited at training this week. “It’s starting to hit home, that this is it, that their season ends if they don’t win,” Bishop said. “We simply have to start better and not afford to think we can just come back from a few points down.” Long-haired prop Zac Lemberg will be critical to getting the Jets up the field. Lemberg is currently being courted by both the Gold Coast Titans and the Brisbane Broncos. Jets CEO Brad Wolens said the Titans were keen on bringing Lemberg into their under-20s team next year. “He’s one of four or five Colts the Titans are looking at,” Wolens said. Lemberg’s manager Paul Srama said he was a fantastic prospect who had gone under the radar, until now. “He’s developed late but I think he’s tremendously talented,” Srama said. “Props tend to come on later in life and I think he has NRL potential. “There’s a few clubs watching him at the moment.” Bishop said it was time five-eighth Callum Waldrum gave a man-of-the-match performance. “He needs to grab the game by the neck,” Bishop said. “He’s had some great performances in the Q Cup team but hasn’t done it for a while in Colts and we need him to do that against the Coast.” The Jets have suffered a blow on match eve with impressive back rower Matt Avier called up to National Youth Competition by the Gold Coast Titans. The Jets are coming off a 24-18 loss to the Tweed Heads Seagulls. (Courtesy Chris Garry Qld Times )
Broncos young gun Josh Hoffman urged to consider Maroons over Kiwis JOSH Hoffman's New Zealander father has stepped into the representative tug-of-war for the Broncos fullback by urging his son to seriously consider pledging his future to the Maroons and Australia. As he prepares for Friday night's clash against the Knights in Newcastle, Hoffman revealed he had been personally contacted by Kiwis coach Stephen Kearney as Australia's trans-Tasman foes initiated moves to poach the Broncos flyer. But the Kiwis' pursuit of Hoffman took an intriguing twist on Thursday night when his NZ-born father, Shane, said he would not pressure his boy to wear the famous black-and-white jumper. "I've told Josh he was born here in Queensland and if that is what he desires that's what I'll be supporting," Shane Hoffman said. "I'd like to see him aspire to represent the country of his birth." Under his playing contract registered with the NRL, Hoffman, born in the north Queensland town of Mackay, is eligible for Queensland after officially swearing his allegiance to the Maroons. But the 22-year-old admits he is wavering after a call from Kearney, who is understood to be keen on gauging Hoffman's desire to play for the Kiwis at the end-of-season Four Nations. "It's a really tough decision for me. My heart is with Queensland but I am giving some thought to New Zealand," said Hoffman, whose fullback predecessor Karmichael Hunt faced a similar scenario before he rejected the Kiwis and went on to represent Queensland and the Kangaroos. "I've got a few missed calls from Stephen Kearney. I haven't got back to him yet, he's obviously keen to get me on board with the Kiwis but I'll cross that bridge when the season ends with the Broncos. "Most people thought I was indigenous only and it's opened a few eyes that my dad is a Kiwi. "I've played in a Queensland Residents side and that had a similar build-up to what I've seen in Origin. "It would be a good thing to play for the Maroons, but I haven't ruled out New Zealand." Aiding the Kiwis' poaching attempt is, ironically, Queensland's plethora of backline stocks. With Melbourne sensation Billy Slater, 27, having a mortgage on the Maroons' No.1 jumper and Darius Boyd another fullback option, Hoffman concedes the logjam of talent could convince him to chase his representative ambitions with the Kiwis. ARL chief executive Geoff Carr said Hoffman could still play for New Zealand regardless of his official declaration. Hoffman would not be the first Queenslander to renounce his ties, with Cairns junior Brent Webb playing 17 Tests for the Kiwis between 2004-08 after the former Warriors utility qualified under the residency rule. As a kid Hoffman would perform the haka in his lounge room watching All Blacks games, but his father said he would not pressure his son to represent the Kiwis. "There's the time frame issue to consider. Who knows how long Billy Slater will be there for Queensland?" Shane Hoffman said. "Whatever Josh decides is fine by me." Matt Srama featues in Titans NRL trials Titans NYC Palyer of the Year Matt Srama has featured heavily in the 1st two Titans NRL Trials of 2011. Srama who has been training with the NRL squad since November, looked very sharp against the Broncos and then made a big impact off the bench against the Rabbitohs in Coffs Harbour last Saturday.
Jacks to debut for Roosters against Jets Ryley Jacks travelled to Ipswich this week with the Roosters NRL squad for the trial against the Ipswich Jets on Saturday night. The 18 year old played 60 minutes and certainly looked the part. He showed some very nice touches with the ball and was extremely strong in defence. Jacks is signed to the Roosters for 2 years and has been training with both the NRL and NYC squads.
Young Ipswich stars to feature in NYC teams in 2011 Former Jets Colts stars Callum Waldrum, Doug Asiata, Zac Lemberg, Dave Faamita & James Furminger all look set to play big parts for their NYC Clubs in 2011. Waldrum & Asiata are with the Titans & Lemberg, Faamita & Furminger are all with the Broncos. They have all trained hard in the off season and are looking forward to making a big impact in 2011.
Broncos snapup young gun AFTER idolising Brisbane Broncos superstar Justin Hodges for the past decade, Ipswich Jets young gun James Furminger could end up playing alongside him. The Ipswich Jets winger and former Olympic swimming hopeful has signed with the Brisbane Broncos for 2011 after rejecting interest from the Gold Coast Titans. Furminger, 18, has starred in the Jets Colts team this year, scoring five tries in one game and playing several matches in the Queensland Cup side. But it was not until he played for south-east Queensland representative rugby league team the Kookaburras that his talent was finally noticed. “After the game, a Broncos guy came up and spoke to me and it all snow-balled from there,” Furminger said. “It's amazing to think I'll be at the club I've been a fan of all my life. My grandma is a huge Broncos fan so she was one of the first people I told and she was stoked for me.” Furminger's rise through rugby league's ranks has been incredible. Until this year the former Ipswich Grammar student had not played rugby league for several years. He only made IGS's second 15 rugby union team and then when he left high school, he dedicated his sporting ambition to swimming. Former Olympic bronze medallist Justin Lemberg, who runs the Goodna Aquatic Centre, said Furminger had Olympic potential . . . all he needed to do was train full time for the next few years. “He did swimming training twice a week while he was in high school and he was naturally fast in the pool,” Lemberg said. “So I told him to try swimming full-time and he may have the potential to become a professional swimmer and if he stuck at it he probably, would have been.” But instead Furminger quit black line chasing to play footy with his best mates at the Jets. Furminger said his bold decision to step out of the pool for good was now paying dividends. “It's been an amazing year, incredible really. I've followed the Broncos all my life and my favourite player was Justin Hodges so it's strange to think I'll be in their colours next year,” Furminger said. “I didn't like swimming training anymore. Waking up so early. I wasn't enjoying it.” Furminger will be a member of the Broncos Toyota Cup squad to begin with but hopes an impressive first season will see him join the NRL squad. “I have a job to do with the Jets Colts first though and hopefully we can make it to the finals.” (Story Courtesy Queensland Times - Chris Garry)
Young Jacks sizzles as Tigers Colts get a win Ryley Jacks led an Easts Colts team out of the danger zone and into possible semi-final contention with a super game against the Bears on Saturday. Jacks was on fire in the 1st half creating line breaks at will and scoring a try himself. He picked up another in the 2nd half as the Tigers won 46 - 24. Andrew Farrenden and Daniel Wallace also scored doubles for the Tigers with Wallace particularly impressive.
Hoffman arrives as Hunt replacement Brisbane has found its long-term replacement for full-back Karmichael Hunt, with 22-year-old Josh Hoffman confirming his arrival in a courageous 24-10 NRL win over the Titans at Skilled Park on Friday night. Down 10-6 at half-time to a Titans side that had a mountain of first-half possession, Brisbane outscored the Gold Coast 18-0 in the second stanza with Cowboys-bound winger Antonio Winterstein crossing twice in the space of 13 minutes. His second try came after Hoffman had shown great hands to pick a low pass up of his bootlaces and grubber down the left touch line for his winger. "It's something Antonio and I have worked on at training and he's been a bit angry at me for not trying it," smiled Hoffman, who earned high praise from his coach Ivan Henjak after the win. "It wasn't that hard, because it so low it was easy to slip it onto my boot," said Hoffman, downplaying his brilliant move. Henjak said Hoffman had been outstanding all season but had been "really special" against the Titans. Hoffman was outstanding at the back, carried the ball back fearlessly, saved a number of dangerous situations reading the play and got heavily involved in Brisbane's attack in the second half. Srama double sets up Titans win Titans Toyota Cup star Matt Srama has scored a crucial double to set up a solid win for the Titans in the local derby against the Brisbane Broncos. Srama, who is currently in negotiations for a contract extension with the Gold Coast club, has been in sparkling form. Ï think I'm playing pretty good football at the moment said the modest Srama. Srama also scored a vital try in the Titans win over Wests Tigers the week before. He is dominating the Toyota Cup stats for one on one tackles and dummy half runs and is hoping the club can consolidate a spot in the top eight with an away win against the Dragons this week. The only disappointing news out of the game was the 1st half injury to lock Jamie Dowling. He will have scans on an injured shoulder and hopes to be back on the field for the next game.
Young Catalyst players star Young catalyst Stars Lorenzo Vogel and Kaleo Tupaí had played starring roles in their respective championships. Vogel played in the Qld maroons in the U15 national cahmpionships in Canberra last month and Tupaí made the Queensland U13 team from the Rockhamton State Tiles earlier in July. Both look to have promising futures.

Furminger & Jacks pick up 8 tries in Kookaburras games James Furminger has continued on his tryscoring spree with 5 more tries in the 2 games at the Win TV Divisional Championships over the weekend. Both players had a great Tournament and will go close to making the Queensland Rangers team.

Furminger who has played Q Cup for the Jets this year should now be in the Titans & Broncos sights with his sparkling form. Jets 5/8 Callum Waldrum had a hand in two as he continues to work his way back from injury.
Hoffman sticks with Broncos for 2 more years Broncos fullback Josh Hoffman (above) has signed with the Brisbane Broncos for another 2 years. Hoffman will be with the club until 2012 and has been in great form.
Miliszewski & Jones pick up tries in Burleigh Colts win Prop Jono Miliszewski & flying winger Brad Jones have scored tries in the Bears 40-14 win over Wynnum Colts. More to follow...
Titan Jamie Dowling joins Catalyst Titans U20's fullback Jamie Dowling (above) has joined Catalyst Sports Management for the next 2 years. Dowling, who has captained the Toyota Cup team this year, had been in sensational form until a recent knee injury, put a kink in his season. Dowling returned from the injury 2 weeks ago in the Titans great come from behind victory over the higher placed Broncos. Dowling scored a vital try playing in the centres late in the game. Press Release Catalyst Sports Management Pty Ltd Director Paul Hogan has been recently contacted by the Sunday Mail to comment on other media stories that some Under 20 Players have not been paid by the Gold Coast Jetstar Titans. While Hogan did confirm that some players hadn’t received some payments, he agreed with Titans CEO Michael Searle that there were some paperwork issues that had to be sorted out before some payments could proceed. Those issues have been dealt with and the Players have now been paid up to date. “I can now confirm that our players have been paid in full and that we are very happy with how the Titans have handled this situation. It seems to have blown up into something bigger then it really was.” Hogan said.
Hoffman ready for another huge NRL season in 2011To appreciate just how far reigning Brisbane Broncos Player of the Year Josh Hoffman has come in 12 short months, remember that he couldn't get an NRL jumper in round one last year. But the boom No.1, initially earmarked as Karmichael Hunt's successor last year before teen prodigy Corey Norman's 2010 trial form blew him out of the water, eventually got his chance in round five. And Hoffman, 22, never looked back, collecting contract offers from rival clubs, Brisbane's best and fairest medal, a "yes" from fiancee Emma Kerr and overtures from the Kiwis during a dizzy 2010 season. Now, as he embarks on a new campaign in Friday night's derby against North Queensland Cowboys, Hoffman is determined to beat off the second-year blues and emerge as a "leader" in a raw Broncos backline."Last year was a big season for me, I'm just looking to take that performance and build up from there," he said. "Last year was securing a spot for me, this year I feel more comfortable around the good talent in the club, and I feel it's my role to be a leader and set a good example." The Mackay junior and one-time Cowboys scholarship holder's first assignment is whiz Matt Bowen. "He got a good shot on me (in a game last August) and it rattled me a bit ... I wasn't expecting that from a little fella like him," Hoffman said. "Matty is obviously a very talented footballer and he's fast and he's quick, so hopefully I can match up to it." Hoffman admitted Hodges's expected round one absence will hurt, but he backed rookie Jack Reed to surprise against Cowboys and Test star Willie Tonga. "It's a pretty big blow for us but we missed him last year and I'm sure whoever fills his shoes will do a good job," Hoffman said. "Jack's had two good trial matches this year and he's a pretty strong defender and he's got some size to him. He's (Reed) deceptive with his speed so I think he could match him (Tonga)." Hoffman gave teen flyer Dane Gagai, also set to be unveiled at NRL level, a vote of confidence. If there are any ghosts in the Broncos' locker room after last year's 10th-placed finish, they aren't haunting Hoffman after his stellar breakthrough season. "It's dust in the wind, it's behind us now. This season's a new one," he said. "Some of the boys dwell on last year and it builds them up a bit. I'm not one for that." (Story FoxSports)
Hoffman to follow lead of Karmichael Hunt NEW Broncos fullback Josh Hoffman is not a blockbusting Karmichael Hunt style of player yet, but he is willing to work at it. Hoffman, 22, has been preferred over teenager Corey Norman for Sunday's match against Cronulla at Suncorp Stadium because of his superior running game. Hunt, who is playing rugby union in France before joining the new Gold Coast AFL club, was renowned as a kamikaze runner at the Broncos where he debuted as a 17-year-old in 2004. Hoffman said yesterday he hoped this would be his year after biding his time while Hunt was at the club, but an injury in the trials set him back. "Being a shadow for Karmichael was a real eye opener for me," he said. "But I think I will have to put on a bit more weight to play the same role. "He was a bit fearless, so maybe at training I have to get a few boys there and run straight at them, maybe someone like (prop) Nick Kenny, and see how I go." Hunt played at 92kg last year while Hoffman weighs 89kg and at 183cm is 3cm shorter than his predecessor. Hoffman played centre for Redcliffe in the Queensland Cup after his trial mishap, allowing Norman to get first crack at fullback at the Broncos, with Hoffman also playing wing in his return to the NRL against St George Illawarra last Friday. "There will always be a tussle between us, but we bring different assets to the team," Hoffman said. "Corey, being a five-eighth, has got more of a ball playing role and I've been a kick returner with a running role. "But in saying that I can work on other things and only improve each day." Hoffman said the death of his mother, Grace, from a brain aneurism last year had tested his resolve, but he hoped his hard work in the face of adversity was about to pay dividends. "As soon as I got the call from (coach) Ivan Henjak and he told me I was playing fullback, it put a big smile on my face and I thought this was a good time for me to step up," he said.Kenny missed training yesterday because of an ongoing back problem, but goal kicking lock Corey Parker lasted the entire session after missing three games with a medial ligament strain. "I felt good out there, but we'll see if there is any swelling of the knee tomorrow," Parker said. Hoffman said if Parker returned it would take the pressure off Test forward Sam Thaiday. "Sam has really stepped up his game and having Corey there will only make his job a bit easier," he said. (Story Courtesy Courier-mail)
Moses Rauluni get his Century at Sarries Moses Rauluni plays his 100th game this weekend for London Club Saracens. Rauluni the Fiji Captain has been with sarries since 2004 and joins an elite group of Players at Sarries. Kam Ratuvou (above centre) also has returned from injury in time for the play-offs.
Matt Srama stars in Titans U20 Wins Matt Srama (above)has played a big hand in both the Titans U20s wins this season. Srama who hastarted at hooker in both games against the Warriors and the Rabbitohs, will look to contrinue the run against a strong Raiders team, fresh off a spanking of the Broncos in last Monday nights game. He will be joined this week by Rhys jacks who starts at half back for the 1st time this season.
Mzembe returns to where it all began Former Ipswich crowd favourite Gideon Mzembe returns to where his Queensland Cup career started when his Norths Devils team ventures to the North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday night. The former IGS track and field star will try to ignite a slick Devils backline in the round three clash. Norths haven’t been spectacular in the opening two weeks but, much to coach Kevin Carmichael’s delight, they have got the all important two points on both occasions. The Jets crashed back to earth last week against Redcliffe but Glenn Lazarus’ side should be a different proposition on home soil. Their first appearance at home in round one netted a 32-16 victory over the Easts Tigers. That match featured a brilliant performance by William Zillman but critics are questioning whether the Jets can match that form now that the former Raiders flyer has returned to the NRL with the Titans. Callum Waldrum also had a big game that night in his debut and will line up in the halves for his third Q Cup game. One of Catalyst’s latest signings, James Furminger will make his Qld Cup debut for a Jets team looking to turn around last weeks loss to a Mick Roberts/Josh Hoffman inspired Dolphins. With the Jets back at home that will be looking for big crowd support. Colts prop Zac Lemberg will be out to continue his great early season form after his outstanding game against Redcliffe last week.
Hoffman & Roberts star in big Dolphins win Mick Roberts has orchetrated a big 2nd half win for the Dolphins over the Jets 40-10. The Redcliffe Dolphins lead 16-10 early in the 2nd half before running away on the back of some Josh Hoffman inspired defence. Hoffma also made 3 try assists in an outstanding performance which must have him close to a shot at the Broncos soon. Hoffman also scored a try in the come from behind win over the Tweed Heads Seagulls 32 - 30 in the 1st round. Hoffman scored a 1st half try and had a hand in two others.
Waldrum debut in big Q Cup win for Jets DESPITE having just 24 hours notice that he would be playing his first Queensland Cup game, Ipswich Jets colt Callum Waldrum (above)showed why he was handed the senior side’s coveted number 7 jersey. The 18-year-old was thrown into the Jets’ top outfit after veteran halfback Ian Lacey aggravated a quad strain on match eve. Waldrum gave the Jets creativity in attack, having a significant hand in their 32-16 win over the Easts Tigers at North Ipswich Reserve on Saturday night. The light-footed five-eighth scored the Jets’ first try after picking up the scraps from a Todd Riggs bomb. But Waldrum soon showed he could do more than just be in the right place at the right time. He chased down an Easts player who looked certain to score. He took Easts star Lagi Setu head-on several times and threw a sublime no-look short ball for William Zillman to scoot away and eventually link with Smith Samau for one of the game’s many spectacular tries. The apprentice plumber, who was the outstanding player in last year’s Jets colts’ team, said he was amazed at the intensity in the Queensland Cup. “It was more full-on than I expected actually,” Waldrum said. “I was not that nervous beforehand and all the boys were geeing me up through the game and making me feel comfortable. “It was a good experience and hopefully I can get another chance in the side soon.” Waldrum may have an extended run in the Jets side after five-eighth Todd Riggs suffered a knee injury which may rule him out of next week’s match against Redcliffe at Dolphin Oval. Jets coach Glenn Lazarus was impressed with Waldrum. “I told him before the game, I don’t need you to score five tries, just make the tackles you need to and be there in support,” Lazarus said. “If Riggs or Lacey are not right next week, then Callum will certainly get another run.” Article Courtesy Chris Garry Queensland Times
Ryley Jacks signs with Roosters Former SLC 1st XV Captain & Easts MM U18 Captian has signed a two year deal with the Sydney Roosters.
Hoffman facing fitness test for spot in final trial AFTER spending the off-season preparing to fill the significant void left by Karmichael Hunt's defection to AFL, Josh Hoffman's chances of wearing the No. 1 in the opening round could hang on a low-key fitness test on Tuesday. The talented Hoffman had been considered the frontrunner to replace Hunt, but an untimely ankle injury has seen him come back to the pack and he needs a strong performance against Redcliffe in the Broncos' final trial this weekend. "I approached the off-season with the goal of making that position my own and it's pretty frustrating to get this injury now," Hoffman said yesterday. "I'll have a run around on it tomorrow and see how it goes. I am just going to have a light fitness test and hopefully I get the thumbs-up." Hoffman watched on from the sidelines on Saturday night as rookie Corey Norman and then Test star Israel Folau delivered eye-catching auditions in the custodian's role against Canberra. "With Corey Norman having a blinder on the weekend, I'm desperate to show what I can do as well," Hoffman said. "I'd love to play well against my old club down at Redcliffe. I've played a lot of footy down there. "They are big shoes to fill with Karmichael going. He was obviously a great player and before he left the club I really tried to learn as much as I could from him. "But I am trying to bring my own style to the position as well. The most important thing is to be a player back there that the other players have faith in." Article Karl De Kroo & Courier Mail
Rising Stars get Tigers home Two of Catalyst latest signings have combined to get the Easts Mel Meninga Cup side home against Souths on Friday Night. Ryley Jacks and Ash Bull, both 17, were able to pull out something special to get up against the favoured Magpies in the U18 Competition. Down 22-16 in the 2nd half, the Tigers got home 30 – 22. They achieved the win on the back of some strong running from Bull, the deft playmaking of Jacks and some great finishing from the Easts outside backs. Both Jacks & Bull played 1st XV for St Laurences College in 2009 and have returned to Rugby League in fine touch. Bull, who has worked hard in the gym over the last 2 months, is showing the benefits of the work and he continues to impress with determined running and aggressive defence. Bull starts his Engineering degree at QUT in 2 weeks and is looking forward to the study. Jacks, a senior touch football star was outstanding in steering his side around the park with his long bullet passes and was caught 3 times on the tryline after line breaks. He finished off the Magpies with a pinpoint grubber kick into the in-goal for the Tigers final try. Jacks, the Easts Captain, said after the game they were happy to pick up the points against Souths at Brandon Park after a frustrating draw with the Sunshine Coast in week 1 of the competition. “We didn’t play well against Sunny Coast and turned over too much ball. This week, we hung in there and finished a lot more of our sets.” Jacks, an apprentice Carpenter, is now looking forward to 3 home games in a row to challenge for the top spot in the Southern Conference of the U18 Competition.
Lemberg stars in big Jets Colts win
Matt Srama stars in Titans U20 Win
Matt Srama to start at hooker Matt Srama will start at hooker for the Titans U20 against the NZ Warriors on Sunday in the season opener. Srama has been in outstanding trial form and will be keen to kick off the season with a win against the Warriors big side. Rhys jacks has been named on an extended bench, and will pay for Titans feeder club the Ipswich Jets on Saturday against his old club, Easts.
Young Tigers win again The Easts U18 Mal Meninga Cup team has won a hard fought game against the Norths side 24 - 20. The Tigers Captain Ryley Jacks (below) was again outstanding, showing a maturity beyond his years to close out a Norths team full of Broncos Academy players. Norths took an early lead before Easts scored 3 first half tries, 2 of them engineered by Jacks. Big prop Ashley Bull had a hand in the 2nd try to Eni Folau with a tough hitup close to the line and a nice offload to Jacks, who had doubled around. With an Easts player in the sinbin to start the 2nd half, the Devils were able to get back into the game with 2 quick tries. Both teams were left to slug it out over the final 10 minutes with Jacks forcing 3 repeat sets for the Tigers, who were out on their feet. The final score showed the closeness of the game which looked more like a FOGS Colts game then an U18 fixture.
Hoffman to play centres for Dolphins Josh Hoffman will play in the centres this week for the Redcliffe Dolphins after he was not named in the Broncos team for the season opener against the Cowboys on Friday night. This is the second time he has been overlooked for the fullback spot at the Broncos. Last season the Broncos chose Dale Copely at fullback for the Sharks game; a game where they were hopelessly outclassed. Hoffman was put up the next week and was outstanding. He has a strong relationship with the Dolphins players and the Club and they are sure to be keen to help Hoffman (below) find his way beck into the Broncos team as soon as possible.
Srama & Jacks sign with Titans Matt Srama & Rhys Jacks have now signed with the Gold Coast Jetstar Titans U20 Squad for 2010. Both players have been playing in the trials and are looking forward to the 2010 season in the under 20 competition.
Mzembe looking towards big season - 5th February 2010 One of Catalyst’s latest recruits, Gideon Mzembe (above) has said he is looking forward to the coming season where he will play with the Norths Devils in the Qld Cup. After finishing 2nd in the try scoring list in 2009 he hopes to go one better in 2010. Mzembe has a wealth of Qld Cup experience and has been involved in both the Manly and Broncos NRL squads over the past 4 seasons. He still looks towards establishing himself in the NRL and scoring all those tries at the next level.
Walker picks up hat-trick - 31 January 2010 Newcastle Falcons hooker Alex Walker has scored a hat-trick of tries against the Cardiff Blues on Sunday. Walker touched down in the 15th, 35th and 65th minutes of the game. In the end the Blues ran out 45-24 winners with the Newcastle kickers unable to convert any of the teams 4 tries. Walker was outstanding in the set plays with the Newcastle scrum dominating and also shone in general play until replaced in the 50th minute. He was then summoned from the bench immediately as the reserve hooker was sinbinned for killing a ruck on his own line.
Ratuvou set to sign new deal with Sarries Fijian star Kameli Ratuvou looks set to sign a new 3 year deal with Saracens. Kameli has been with the club since 2006 and has played 74 games for the London Team. The final details of the deal are being negotiated and he may sign within the next few days. His signing would be a further boost to the current leaders of the Guiness Premiership.
Srama & Jacks set to sign with Titans Matt Srama & Rhys Jacks have been named in the Titans U20 Squad and look set to sign for the Gold Coast Club in 2010. Both young players have been impressive in their pre season training and look set for a big season ahead.
Waldrum & Lemberg re-sign with Jets Ipswich Jets Callum Waldrum & Zac Lemberg have signed a further 1 year deal with the Ipswich Jets. Both players are only 18 and look to have bright futures in the game after excellent trials for the Titans. The Jets are a feeder club for the Gold Coast NRL club. Jacks and Jones star in Grand final win Two of Catalyst’s latest recruits, Rhys Jacks and Charlie Jones have starred in the FOGS Colts Grand Final. The Easts Tigers defeated the red hot favourites Souths Magpies, who were the minor premiers. Easts finished a clear second on the table and it was a case of the best 2 teams facing off. In a thriller Easts held off Souths 30-28. Jacks, an Australian touch football player and former schoolboy rugby star flyhalf, was the Captain of the Easts Colts team. He said he was extremely proud of how his team had played all season. Despite a 15-2 penalty count against them the Tigers fought hard over the last 10 minutes to hold out a fast finishing Magpies outfit. Jacks played a great Captains knock and steered the Easts team around the park with pinpoint accurate kicks and deft passing. Jones, who because of a lack of depth, played prop and was outstanding. Despite being only 88 kgs, he threw himself at the line and the forwards clashes against the 2 best props in the Colts comp, Rez Phillips and Marty Cordwell, were brutal. Jones scored a tough try midway thorough the 2nd half for the Tigers to skip 12 points clear. He looked like the lock forward he is chasing down a kicker to force an error and defusing a chip and chase when the Magpies were trying to get back into the game. Jacks also picked up the Easts Colt of the Year award at the Easts annual dinner.
Srama eager for more Qld Cup He's already pencilled in as a Gold Coast Titan for 2010. But exciting Ipswich Jets playmaker Matt Srama has revealed he’s considering skipping the National Youth Competition (NYC) in favour of developing his craft in the Queensland Cup. A standout in the Jets Colts team for the past two years, the dynamic 18-year-old made a seamless transition to the top grade when introduced in the latter stages of the season. With Srama at five-eighth the Jets staged a stunning resurgence, his calm head and ability to pick holes in the defence proving the perfect foil for halfback Ian Lacey. It was then no surprise when Srama was named the club’s Queensland Cup rookie of the year last week. His days in the green and white appear to be numbered, with the Titans official website already listing him among their NYC (under-20s) squad. However, a desire to play in a more physical competition may see the Forest Lake teenager stay at Ipswich. I’ve got a couple of meetings with the Gold Coast in a few weeks to negotiate things,” he said. “At the moment I’m probably looking at going down, but I wouldn’t mind staying at the Jets, staying in the Q Cup, playing against the men. “I haven’t really made up my mind what I’m doing next year, but if I do (play under-20s) my experience in the Q Cup will probably (put) me a step ahead of everyone else.” What will also stand Srama in good stead is the physical beating his 80kg frame endured, especially in defence. “Just the speed and the amount of hits and bashing ... it’s much different to anything I’ve ever played,” Srama said. “The maturity in my game has improved out of sight. “I owe a lot to Lazzo and the Walker boys (assistant coaches Shane and Ben Walker) – they taught me a heap.”

Matt Srama's efforts can't get Jets across the line Jets budding 5/8 star Matt Srama may have shown up his veteran rival Matt Geyer but it was not enough to get the Ipswich Jets into the Q Cup semi finals. The Jets missed by three points in the semi final race but led the Norths Devils with 9 minutes to go. Norths, who had everything to play for, were too strong in the end. Srama, who made numerous line breaks, can reflect on a fantastic 6 weeks in the Jets top team and showed he is an NRL star in the making. Srama will make a decision in the next few weeks where he plays next season with the Titans keen for him to play in their U20 program in 2010.
